FIRST TANTEO RESEARCH ROUNDTABLE

MilesKm hosted its first research roundtable at the Royal College of Art on 27th November 2014.

Invited to attend by MilesKm co-directors Warren Andrews and Nora Silva, were Marta Amoros, Simin Evasi, Declan Jenkins, Christopher Lawrence and Nicholas Morris. The roundtable was chaired by Demelza Watts.

Most of this session was spent concentrating on finalising the research questions that will inform the research that MilesKm will be instigating and encouraging in the upcoming year. Focusing on the structure and language of the questions over the content they encourage. The aim was to make sure that the questions were clear, concise and broad enough to allow a diverse series of responses. This proved to be a successful endeavour. We came away from this first roundtable with five questions and the beginnings of a series of sub questions that will be completed, and published, in the coming weeks. The audio of this discussion will be made available soon.

Below are the preliminary questions for the Tanteo research project. They are subject to change and are flexible guidelines for responses, rather than rigid guidelines.

1. What contexts are arts educational  institutions operating within? What impact does this have on the form artistic education is delivered through?

2. What are the functions of a artistic educational experience?

3. What is the function of a arts education institution?

4. What are the current models, forms, structures and ideological approaches that are employed within arts education institutes?

5. What alternative models, forms, structures and ideological approaches could be employed within artistic learning? What would their effect be?

Having now put these questions out into the public realm we are keen to hear people's feedback and begin to accept responses to these questions. Responses can take any form, from an academic sourced piece of writing to a short video response and including everything in between. A response does not have to cover all five questions, it could consider one question, or even part of one question. Please send any responses or queries to Mileskilometros@gmail.com.

Going forward the MilesKm team will be meeting in the coming weeks to settle on the sub questions to each question and begin to pin down the terms of each question. The sub questions will aim to be pointers and prompts for anyone wishing to respond. The terms of the questions will be addressed in a series of posts to this blog in the coming weeks.

Plans are being made for the second Tanteo Research Roundtable which will take place at the end of January, this session will be focused on discussing the content of the questions outlined above.
